    We investigate the possibility of synthesizing stable probability distribution generators on the basis of a complete system of deterministic elements and generators of random signals described by nonhomogeneous Markov chains. It is shown that such generators can be obtained by constructing some finite Moore automata with special transition functions. Preliminary speed estimates of the generators with given accuracy of realization of the distribution are found. The results are based on multiplicative properties of regular stochastic matrices

    The design, fabrication, and initial testing of a rocket engine turbopump (TPA) for the delivery of high pressure liquid oxygen using hot oxygen for the turbine drive fluid are described. This TPA is basic to the dual expander engine which uses both oxygen and hydrogen as working fluids. Separate tasks addressed the key issue of materials for this TPA. All materials selections emphasized compatibility with hot oxygen. The OX TPA design uses a two-stage centrifugal pump driven by a single-stage axial turbine on a common shaft. The design includes ports for three shaft displacement/speed sensors, various temperature measurements, and accelerometers

    Learning to breathe with Tai Chi online - qualitative data from a randomized controlled feasibility study of patients with cystic fibrosis

    Introduction Tai Chi (TC), a gentle exercise, incorporates meditative movement and respiratory control. The high risk of cross infection for people with cystic fibrosis (CF) requires close management in healthcare settings, limiting group activities such as TC. A mixed-methods randomized controlled feasibility study compared teaching TC over the internet with in-person, face to face TC tuition provided to CF patients. This article explores qualitative data from patients and TC instructors on their attitudes, acceptability and engagement with the two modes of TC delivery. Methods Qualitative data from CF patients (>6 years) were collected using Skype interviews/focus groups and written feedback. TC instructors provided weekly written feedback, and took part in interviews/ focus groups at the end of the study. Patient and instructor interviews explored their experiences and engagement with TC online delivery and ability to practice. Results Irrespective of the type of TC delivery, all CF participants interviewed (n = 28) practiced between lessons and most wanted to continue TC. Teenagers were more likely to miss TC appointments. Internet delivery was well received by both patients and TC instructors. Two patients reported difficulties with screen size/camera and one with internet connectivity. Conclusion Both face-to-face and internet delivery of TC lessons were equally well received and perceived as beneficial. In the current COVID-19 pandemic, CF patients self-isolating could find this intervention provides important support, therefore the programme was made available on YouTube in April 2020 and linked to the websites of the CF charities funding the research

    Femtosecond photoswitching dynamics and microsecond thermal conversion driven by laser heating in FeIII spin-crossover solids.

    International audienceIn this paper we review time-resolved studies of ultrafast light-induced spin-state switching, triggered by a femtosecond laser flash,and the following out-of-equilibrium dynamics in FeIII spincrossover crystals. The out-of-equilibrium dynamics involves several steps, resulting fromthe ultrafast molecular photoswitchingof low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) states in solids. First, the transient HS state is reached within 200 femtoseconds, and mayrapidly decayinto the stable LS state of the system. A second process at longer delay,associated with volume expansion, drives additional conversion to the HS state during the so-called elastic step occurring at nanosecond time scale. Finally,the laser heating process induces a temperature jump in the crystal that may result in a significant thermal population of the HS state on microsecond time scale. The photoswitching mechanism is of local nature and has linear dependenceon the excitation fluence, whereas the heating effect can macroscopically perturb the LS/HS equilibrium. We discuss similarities and differences between photoswitching dynamics in solution and in different crystals for which the thermal spin conversion is of more or less pronounced cooperative nature

    CEP-stable Tunable THz-Emission Originating from Laser-Waveform-Controlled Sub-Cycle Plasma-Electron Bursts

    We study THz-emission from a plasma driven by an incommensurate-frequency two-colour laser field. A semi-classical transient electron current model is derived from a fully quantum-mechanical description of the emission process in terms of sub-cycle field-ionization followed by continuum-continuum electron transitions. For the experiment, a CEP-locked laser and a near-degenerate optical parametric amplifier are used to produce two-colour pulses that consist of the fundamental and its near-half frequency. By choosing two incommensurate frequencies, the frequency of the CEP-stable THz-emission can be continuously tuned into the mid-IR range. This measured frequency dependence of the THz-emission is found to be consistent with the semi-classical transient electron current model, similar to the Brunel mechanism of harmonic generation

    Comparing hybrid data assimilation methods on the Lorenz 1963 model with increasing nonlinearity

    We systematically compare the performance of ETKF-4DVAR, 4DVAR-BEN and 4DENVAR with respect to two traditional methods (4DVAR and ETKF) and an ensemble transform Kalman smoother (ETKS) on the Lorenz 1963 model. We specifically investigated this performance with increasing nonlinearity and using a quasi-static variational assimilation algorithm as a comparison. Using the analysis root mean square error (RMSE) as a metric, these methods have been compared considering (1) assimilation window length and observation interval size and (2) ensemble size to investigate the influence of hybrid background error covariance matrices and nonlinearity on the performance of the methods. For short assimilation windows with close to linear dynamics, it has been shown that all hybrid methods show an improvement in RMSE compared to the traditional methods. For long assimilation window lengths in which nonlinear dynamics are substantial, the variational framework can have diffculties fnding the global minimum of the cost function, so we explore a quasi-static variational assimilation (QSVA) framework. Of the hybrid methods, it is seen that under certain parameters, hybrid methods which do not use a climatological background error covariance do not need QSVA to perform accurately. Generally, results show that the ETKS and hybrid methods that do not use a climatological background error covariance matrix with QSVA outperform all other methods due to the full flow dependency of the background error covariance matrix which also allows for the most nonlinearity

    Geminate recombination of hydroxyl radicals generated in 200 nm photodissociation of aqueous hydrogen peroxide

    The picosecond dynamics of hydroxyl radicals generated in 200 nm photoinduced dissociation of aqueous hydrogen peroxide have been observed through their transient absorbance at 266 nm. It is shown that these kinetics are nearly exponential, with a decay time of ca. 30 ps. The prompt quantum yield for the decomposition of H2O2 is 0.56, and the fraction of hydroxyl radicals escaping from the solvent cage to the water bulk is 64-68%. These recombination kinetics suggest strong caging of the geminate hydroxyl radicals by water. Phenomenologically, these kinetics may be rationalized in terms of the diffusion of hydroxide radicals out of a shallow potential well (a solvent cage) with an Onsager radius of 0.24 nm.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur
